Studies

He was born in Athens in 1959.

A graduate of the Varvakios Standard School, he studied Law at the Law School of the University of Athens (1977-1981).

Music studies: Piano with George Daskoulis, Harmony and Counterpoint with Yannis Ioannidis, Byzantine Music and Greek Folk Song with Simon Karas.

Postgraduate studies: With a scholarship from the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation in Paris, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1981-1987):

Maitrise in Ethnology N. Α. Europe with Paul-Henri Stahl (1982),

D.E.A. in Ethnomusicology (1983) and

Doctoral thesis with Claudie Marcel-Dubois and Magie Andral (“The lyre in Crete and the Dodecanese”, 1987).

Academic career

He taught (PD 407/80) at the Department of Social Anthropology of the University of the Aegean (1989-1992). In 1992 he was elected assistant professor, in 1998 associate professor and in 2009 full professor of Ethnomusicology at the Department of Music Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

-From 2008 to 2016, she taught the course “Music and Cultural Management” in the Interdepartmental Master’s Programme “Music and Culture. Interdisciplinary Analyses and Applications” organized by the Departments of Music Studies and Communication and Media Studies of the University of Athens.

-Since 2016, he is the Director of the Postgraduate Programmes in Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology. Performance-interpretation of traditional music” and “Ethnomusicology and Music Practice”.

In 2021 he was awarded the Spyros Motsenyos Music Prize by the Academy of Athens “for having promoted the Greek Music Tradition and Education to the greatest extent with great scientific and profound efforts”.

Scientific interests

His scientific interests include Greek folk music (with emphasis on local idioms and folk instruments), urban folk music (rebetiko, shadow theatre) and modern Greek song. He also deals with issues of museology, archival organization and cultural management.

He has carried out field research and music recordings throughout Greece and in the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy. He collaborated with Phoebus Anogeianakis in the establishment of the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments-Centre for Ethnomusicology, of which he was President (1991-2014).

From 1995 to 2004 he was coordinator (together with Loukia Droulia) and head of the music group in the research project “Recording of the Greek music and dance tradition. Macedonia” of the Association “Friends of Music” and was responsible, in cooperation with the research team, for the creation of the relevant archive and electronic database in the “Great Music Library of Greece” (www.mmb.org.gr).

He has edited bibliographical, discographic and electronic publications, documentary films, exhibitions, conferences, educational programmes, festivals, concerts and musical theatre performances on Greek music in Greece and abroad.

Artistic interests

He has curated festivals, musical tributes and concerts of traditional music all over Greece and abroad (Cyprus, Italy, Spain, France, Monaco, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Uzbekistan, India, China, Vietnam, USA and Australia), in cooperation with institutions such as the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic, the Greek Parliament, the Ministries of Culture, Education and Foreign Affairs, the Athens and Epidaurus Festivals, the Athens and Thessaloniki Music Festivals, the Athens and Thessaloniki Music Festivals, the Foundation for Hellenic Culture, the European Cultural Centre of Delphi, the Cultural Olympiad, the International Olympic Committee, the European Parliament, Unesco, ERT, etc.ά.

He curated the opening performance of the Beijing Olympic Festival, on the theme of Greek musical tradition (2008).

Collaborator of the state and private radio in the production of radio broadcasts for Greek and foreign traditional music. “Salt of the Earth” is the longest-running radio show of its kind (since 1981), while since 2012 it has been a regular TV show on ERT1 Public Television.

In the field of theatre she has been involved in research, music editing, writing and directing of ancient drama (“Ecclesiastes” at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus), lyrical and musical theatre (GNO, Concert Hall, KTHVE, Badminkton Theatre etc.) and contemporary dance (Dance Theatre “Roes”). He edited the theatrical performance of the narratives of the Smyrna singer Angela Papazoglou, with Anna Vagena. At the National Opera House, he curated a tribute to the 100 years of Greek operetta and Theofrastos Sakellaridis (2007-8), as well as a tribute to Kostas Giannidis with the revival of his operetta “The Little Life of Love” (2009-11).
